Gaps de fim de semana: o que fazer com as posições que você deixa abertas na sexta-feira
Quick answer: a stop loss guarantees you an exit, not a price. If the market reopens on Monday beyond your level, you exit at the first available quote, not at your stop. With a 100-point stop, a 300-point gap turns a planned 1R loss into 4R. The working rule: if your plan cannot absorb a 3R loss, do not carry the position over the weekend.
Pontos principais
- Weekend risk is not in your stop; it is in how far price jumps past it.
- The gap happens while the market is closed, so there is nothing to do in the moment.
- Holding over Friday is a sizing decision, not an analysis decision.
- Weekend swap adds to the cost of that decision.
What a gap actually costs you
A $10,000 account, 1% risk ($100), stop 100 points away. Here is what happens depending on how far the open overshoots your level:
| Monday opens past your stop by | Actual loss | In R |
|---|---|---|
| 0 points (fills at your level) | $100 | −1.0R |
| 50 points | $150 | −1.5R |
| 100 pontos | $200 | −2.0R |
| 300 pontos | $400 | −4.0R |
| 500 points | $600 | −6.0R |
Notice that your “1% risk” can become a 6% loss without you doing anything wrong. That is the entire difference between trading inside the session and carrying positions through the close.
When to close on Friday
| Your situation | Decision |
|---|---|
| You trade intraday | Always close. The gap is not part of your strategy. |
| You swing trade at 1% risk | You can hold, assuming a 3R loss is acceptable. |
| You are in a drawdown | Close. This is not the moment to add uncontrollable risk. |
| There is a macro event over the weekend | Close, or halve the position. |
| Funded account | Check first whether the program allows holding at all. |
How to cut the risk without closing entirely
- Reduce size on Friday. Half the position is half the gap.
- Take a partial and let the rest run with the stop already in profit.
- Avoid instruments with large gaps if you plan to hold: behaviour varies widely between indices, gold and crypto.
- Count the weekend swap before deciding; the triple charge usually lands midweek, but the weekend costs too.
- Never use a stop-limit as protection: in a gap it is precisely the order that does not fill.
Point 1 is the only one that always works. You cannot predict the gap or avoid it with order types; the only thing you control is how many lots are exposed when it happens.
What if the gap goes your way
It happens too, at roughly similar frequency. The problem is the practical asymmetry: a favourable gap hands you a profit you did not plan, while an adverse one can be several times your intended risk. Building a strategy on favourable gaps is betting on a coin that sometimes pays double and sometimes charges quadruple.
How to decide it in advance
This decision should not be made on Friday at five o'clock. It is a line in your written plan: “I close everything on Fridays” or “I hold at half size”. In Cortex Automation the schedule is a setting, so the Friday close happens without depending on your judgement that day; the Cortex Signal Kit delivers signals with defined stop and target so you know exactly what is exposed. For the sizing side there is the free ebook The Risk of Ruin Handbook.
My stop was set, so why did I lose more?
Because a stop triggers at the first available price. If the market reopens beyond your level, your exit happens there, not at the level you marked.
Does a guaranteed stop solve it?
Some brokers offer guaranteed stops for an extra cost. Read the terms: they usually carry a minimum distance and a premium that changes your system's profitability.
Which instruments gap the most?
It depends on the period and the broker. The useful move is to measure it yourself: log Monday's open against Friday's close for several months on the symbols you trade.
What about crypto, which never closes?
The market does not close, but liquidity drops sharply at weekends, so the risk changes shape: less gap, more slippage.
Does an automated system protect me?
It protects you from forgetting to close, which is worth a lot. From the gap itself, nothing protects you except not being in it.
