Cuándo y cómo retirar las ganancias de tu cuenta de trading

Quick answer: decide the policy before you have profits, because afterwards it never feels like the right moment. A rule that works for most people: at the end of a positive month, withdraw 50% of the profit and leave the other 50% compounding. Withdrawing is not distrust in your system — it is turning a number on a screen into money you can no longer lose.

Puntos clave

  • Without a written rule, your mood makes the decision.
  • Withdrawing 100% kills growth; withdrawing 0% makes the whole effort theoretical.
  • Account size changes your behaviour: an account too big for your head degrades execution.
  • Your first withdrawal should be your initial capital, not your profit.

Why almost nobody withdraws

Because there is always an argument to wait: the account is growing, the month is going well, the next round number is close. That reasoning never ends on its own; it ends with a drawdown that takes what you never took out. A written policy breaks the loop, because the decision was already made by someone with no money on the line: you, earlier.

Three policies and what each produces

Policy What it gets you What it gives up
Withdraw everything monthly Steady, tangible income The account never grows
Never withdraw Maximum theoretical compounding Everything stays at risk
50 / 50 Grows and pays at the same time Grows slower than the theoretical max

What it costs in compounding

Let us be honest: withdrawing does slow growth. A $10,000 account at a sustained 3% net per month over 12 months:

Policy Account at 12 months Withdrawn over the year Total
No withdrawals $14,258 $0 $14,258
Withdraw 50% $11,956 $1,956 $13,912
Withdraw 100% $10,000 $3,600 $13,600

The gap between withdrawing nothing and withdrawing half is about $346 over the year — roughly 2.4%. In exchange, the 50/50 policy puts $1,956 outside the account, safe from any losing streak. For most traders that trade is clearly worth making.

A sustained 3% per month is an assumption used to show the arithmetic, not an expectation: very few accounts hold it for twelve consecutive months.

The first withdrawal: take back your capital

Before you think about regular withdrawals, there is one milestone that changes how you trade completely: taking out the money you deposited. From that point on you are trading accumulated profit, and the psychological pressure drops sharply. If you started with $5,000, your first goal is not to double — it is to withdraw that $5,000.

A policy in four lines

  1. When: the first business day of the month, based on last month's result.
  2. How much: 50% of net profit. If the month closed negative, nothing is withdrawn.
  3. Operating floor: never take the account below the size that lets you risk your 1% at the minimum lot.
  4. Where it goes: a separate account, not the one you spend from daily.

Point 3 is what protects the system. If you withdraw so much that you can no longer size properly, you force yourself to risk a larger percentage than you planned. It is the quietest way to break an account that was working.

The effect nobody mentions

An account that is too big for your tolerance makes your execution worse. When 1% goes from $50 to $500, many traders start closing early, moving stops and skipping valid entries — the system did not change, what changed is how losing feels. Withdrawing regularly keeps the size inside what you can execute without flinching. To measure whether this is happening to you, the free ebook The Trading Journal Blueprint includes the plan-compliance field, which is where it shows up first.

Errores comunes

  • Withdrawing only when you need money, instead of on a schedule.
  • Putting the money back after a bad month: it defeats the purpose of taking it out.
  • Withdrawing mid-losing-streak to “save something”.
  • Leaving the account below the size your risk management needs.
  • Not checking your broker's withdrawal fees and processing times before relying on them.

How often should I withdraw?

Monthly works well for most: often enough to build the habit, rare enough to let the account grow.

Does withdrawing really slow growth much?

Less than people fear. In the twelve-month example, withdrawing half costs about 2.4% of the total and puts nearly $2,000 out of reach.

What if my account is small?

Prioritise getting the account to the minimum size for proper position sizing. Withdrawing too early forces you to over-risk.

What about a funded account?

There, payouts follow the program's schedule, not yours. What you do control is what happens to the money once it is paid.

Should I reinvest what I withdraw?

That is a personal financial decision and outside the scope of this article. The only part that matters here is that it leaves the trading account.
